Black Forest

For the October half term holiday we drove to the Black Forest and stayed in a hotel on the side of the Feldberg. Luckily we’d taken advantage of the clock change and managed to leave the house at 6:30am and arrived just as the first snowflakes were falling – a few hours later and the road would have been impassable until the snowploughs cleared them the next day!

The first two days were a white out outside with the snow and howling gale, and apart from walking 50m to the Fundarena (an indoor playground on steroids) we stayed at the hotel and hung out at the pool. By the third day though the clouds lifted and we had some beautiful walks up Feldberg and Seebuck to the Feldsee, so it was another excellent flight free holiday!

In total the drive was a 1,108km round trip which in our Touran with an emission factor of 145g/km and the four of us on board equates to 0.04 tonnesCO2/person. A short haul flight almost anywhere in Europe would emit at least 10 times that much CO2 per person.
