Boulogne-sur-mer

For the February half-term holiday we went to Boulogne-sur-mer in France (about a two and half hour drive from Brussels, and only 20 minutes from the Eurotunnel in Calais). The aquarium Nausicaa near the centre of Boulogne is well worth visiting with kids. It bills itself as the biggest aquarium in Europe, and the main tank is absolutely huge and home to a giant manta ray which was magical to see. Boulogne itself was slightly let down by the amount of dog poo there was everywhere (possibly even more than in Brussels which is saying something!), but the medieval wall round part of the city was nice to walk around and the meal we had at Chez Jules was delicious. On the third day of our trip we visited the nearby seaside town of Wimereux which was very charming (although at high tide the beach completely disappears!) , and in hindsight I think it would have been better to stay there (only a 10 min drive from the aquarium) rather than Boulogne itself.
