We once again had a no-fly holiday, this time somehow managing to make the 9+ hour drive from Brussels to Hjerting in one day. We thought we would be escaping the heat but it was still pretty hot even in Denmark at 29 degrees and our AirBnb though really nice had a lot of West facing glazing and it was like a greenhouse in there! Not being as trusting as the Danes it felt very strange to have to open the windows on the ground floor during the night (it was a bungalow with no fence or hedge on the front side of the house so anyone on the street had easy access) . But apart from that it was great and thankfully it did cool down later in the week after we had our beach days on Fano and Romo island. On the way back we broke up the journey by stopping at a Centre Parcs in Luneburg Heide which the girls absolutely loved because of the amazing waterslides, and we got to walk on the heaths which were beautiful.
(As a quick comparison if we’d flown to Copenhagen from Brussels return flight economy class we’d have emitted 1.8tonnes of CO2 + 600km roundtrip drive from Copenhagen to Hjerting 0.09 tonners = 1.89 tonnes of CO2, vs driving the 1800km round trip in our Touran emitting 0.26 tonnes of CO2. And if we’d flown we wouldn’t have got to stop off in Germany on the way home).
